The news of the death of Honourable Justice D.O.C. Amaechina was heart-wrenching and left me dumbstruck because his was a life that I hoped would be longer, but we all have to accept the sad reality that he has moved on from this side to eternity.

In truth, death is inevitable but My Lord, through his exceptional service to humanity and excellent discharge of his duties, earned a place of immortality in the hearts of those who encountered him.

The soundness of his judgments and rulings gained a good level of prominence within the legal profession and even beyond, such that even if you had not appeared before him, there were chances that you might have heard positive remarks about his intellectual prowess and diligence in the discharge of his duties.

Honourable Justice D.O.C Amaechina came from being an exceptional State Counsel to a Director of Civil Litigation in Anambra State Ministry of Justice and was then elevated to the position of a Judge of the High Court of Anambra State, where he served as an excellent judge until his demise. His intelligence and industry are some of his unmissable attributes, to the extent that his brother judges referred to him as “the living encyclopedia”. Even when the Honourable Justice experienced a downturn in his health, he continued discharging his duties with such level of excellence that many did not believe to be humanly possible for a person dealing with health challenges as he was.

The Honourable Justice Amaechina was a rare breed, but most importantly, a just Judge who always allowed justice and fairness to be his beacons in the discharge of his duties. My deepest sympathies are with the Chief Judge of Anambra State – Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, the family of Honourable Justice D.O.C. Amaechina and the entire membership of the Nigerian Bar Association for the passing unto glory of this icon in the legal profession.

May God give Honourable Justice Amaechina eternal rest and peace and may He also strengthen everyone that is affected by his death with the fortitude to bear this colossal loss.
With sincere sympathy,

OLUMIDE AKPATA
