The Nigerian Law School and the Council of Legal Education (CLE) are yet to issue any official statement following the reported suicide of a male student at the Law School’s Port Harcourt campus. The silence comes amid mounting public outrage and serious allegations of bullying, institutional neglect, and deplorable student welfare conditions.
According to a whistleblower who spoke anonymously to TheNigeriaLawyer, the deceased student had raised multiple concerns about being targeted by fellow students. Rather than investigate or offer protection, campus authorities allegedly forced him to publicly apologise to the entire student body.
“The school did the exact opposite of protecting him,” the source stated. “They made him apologise to the whole school. Now he’s committed suicide after so many attempts to escape the issue and the school itself.”
The source revealed that the student had initially reported issues with his roommates. However, the complaint was dismissed, and he was compelled to apologise both via WhatsApp and in class. Though eventually removed from the shared room, the situation reportedly worsened when he approached the Students’ Affairs department to request a deferment—only to be turned away.
His lifeless body was discovered in his hostel room on the evening of Friday, May 30, 2025.
In the wake of the tragedy, another student, who also asked not to be identified, painted a bleak picture of life at the Law School:
“The living conditions across Nigerian Law School campuses are terrible. The pressure is worse. The Students’ Affairs unit is largely unresponsive. The management and medical units are grossly understaffed and poorly equipped. It’s appalling, to say the least,” a student from NLS Yenagoa Campus said.
There is no justifiable reason why a body as old as the Council of Legal Education should not be able to maintain and regulate humane facilities for its students. We deserve better. Nigerian Law School students deserve better. But at the end of the day, this is Nigeria.”
There are also allegations that the Council of Legal Education is attempting to frame the student’s death as a case of academic pressure in an effort to deflect from systemic issues within the institution.
According to student accounts, fear of reprisal has kept many from speaking publicly. “If you’re doing your job well and diligently, then why are you scared of what the world will say?” one student queried.
As of the time of this report, repeated attempts by TheNigeriaLawyer to reach officials of the Nigerian Law School and the Council of Legal Education for comment have gone unanswered. No public statement has been made regarding the incident, the student’s death, or the allegations that have followed.
The name of the deceased student is being withheld pending official confirmation of notification to the family.
