A Human Rights Activist and the former 2nd Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Monday Ubani, has raised concern on the ambition of the Lagos Branch of NBA to produce both the president and Secretary of the Association in the National level.

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), Ubani says such ambition can work against the branch and give the impression that the branch is greedy.

Read the full statement below:

Every lawyer in Nigeria who knows his or her onions should show some level of interest on the forthcoming Nigerian Bar Association General Election taking place this year, sometime in July. The offices of President, Secretary and others are under hot pursuit by credible and known personalities in the legal profession.

As a concerned stakeholder I am a bit worried about the ambition of members of a particular branch – Lagos Branch to be precise. This Branch no doubt has the highest number of lawyers in their fold more than 125 branches in Nigeria. However their ambition to produce both the President and the Secretary may work against them, more so when the present president is from there. I am not envious, It is my candid opinion, yours is respected.

For the office of the President they have two legal giants running for it and so also for the office of the Secretary, two known legal pundits for it. There are two or more members from the same branch running for other various offices in the forthcoming election. Haba! Kilode! Gini N’ese!

If they all win, we will certainly have Lagos Branch Exco and not Nigerian Bar Association Exco. Hope I have not lied here? How would you view an NBA whose Exco is from just one branch out of the 125 branches from the federation? Be sincere.

To be candid, I admire the political consciousness of Lagos Branch members, but I think they should be sensitive to know that they may be mis-represented as being greedy which is a vice rather than being ambitious which is a virtue. It is just human. I am voicing this out because already there are whisperings and murmurings from concerned members and THEY NEED TO KNOW, hence the title of my text “Should I tell the President”? (Jeffrey Archer’s novel about attempt to kill the president of America that was foiled by FBI)

Advice: It is my considered counsel that they should give consideration to this fact and factor and see what can be done to “streamline” their AMBITION FOR RESULT. No one is against them running for the various offices in the NBA, but they must be SENSITIVE ENOUGH NOT TO BE MIS-REPRESENTED AS BEING GREEDY. Hoha!
Learned views from the legal community will be welcomed and appreciated.
