Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has suspended the Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over alleged dereliction of duty, in a move aimed at enforcing accountability within the state’s healthcare sector.

The suspension, effective immediately, was announced on Thursday in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida. The governor has directed the commissioner to defend himself against allegations of negligence and failure to properly discharge his official responsibilities.

“The Executive Governor has instructed the suspended Commissioner for Health to justify why further sanctions should not be applied, having disregarded the mandate entrusted to him,” the statement read.

The action is part of a broader disciplinary framework under the Idris administration, which has consistently emphasized accountability, discipline, and dedication to duty as core principles of public service.

The suspension comes amid growing criticism of Kebbi’s healthcare system. Public concern escalated after journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa was detained for publishing a viral video showing patients at Kangiwa General Hospital lying on bare metal beds without mattresses. The video sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for urgent reforms in the state’s healthcare facilities.
