Unique Eke Esq., a young lawyer and former Trust Associate at Capital Express Global Trustees Limited, tendered his resignation under duress after being pressured by Obaleke Olufemi, the Group Managing Director (GMD), over his refusal to participate in mandatory morning religious devotions.

On November 14, 2024, Mr. Eke was summoned by Mr. Olufemi, accompanied by Mr. Olufemi Kalejaiye and Mrs. Oyinposola Akinsulie, at approximately 8:15 a.m. During this meeting, the GMD expressed dissatisfaction with Mr. Eke’s decision not to attend the office’s morning prayers, emphasizing that participation was integral to the company’s philosophy, which places significant emphasis on religious activities.

Mr. Olufemi made it clear that participation in the daily 20-minute devotion was non-negotiable and stated that refusal to comply would result in immediate resignation. Despite Mr. Eke’s attempt to explain his personal convictions and request time to consider the mandate, Mr. Olufemi maintained his ultimatum, requiring a resignation letter by 9:00 a.m. the next day.

In compliance with the directive, Mr. Eke submitted his resignation on November 14, 2024. In his letter, he noted:

“Further to the directives of Mr. Obaleke Olufemi, the General Managing Director, I hereby tender my resignation from the employment of Capital Express Global Trustees Limited as a Trust Associate.”

He cited that the reason for his resignation stemmed from the GMD’s dissatisfaction with his decision not to participate in religious activities, reiterating that the directive was given in the presence of senior colleagues.

Shortly after submitting his resignation, Mr. Eke received an acknowledgment email from Mr. Olufemi Kalejaiye at 10:09 a.m., which indicated:

“The organization has reviewed your activity thus far and found your performance to be grossly below acceptance levels… You are hereby informed by this mail that your services are no longer required in the organization with effect from today, Thursday, 14 November 2024.”

All efforts to reach Capital Express Global Trustees Limited for comment were unsuccessful.
