The National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, has disowned a man seen in a viral video wearing the organisation’s First Aid Group uniform while making threats of violence against Enugu State.

Bala Lau also called on the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to identify, arrest and investigate the individual and others who may have been involved in the incident.

In the viral video, the man was seen participating in a jogging exercise while allegedly chanting for AK-47 rifles to be provided for an attack on Enugu.

Reacting to the video, the JIBWIS National Chairman distanced the organisation from the individual and the statements attributed to him, insisting that threats of violence against any community or group were contrary to the teachings, principles and objectives of JIBWIS.

According to Bala Lau, merely wearing the uniform of the organisation’s First Aid Group does not establish that the individual was acting with the authority or approval of JIBWIS.

“Wearing the uniform of our First Aid Group does not mean an individual is acting on behalf of or with the authority of JIBWIS,” he said.

The Islamic scholar urged security agencies to establish the identity of the man, determine the circumstances surrounding the video and investigate those behind it.

He further suggested that the incident could have been deliberately orchestrated by external actors seeking to damage the organisation’s image, although that allegation has not been independently established.

Bala Lau pointed to JIBWIS’s recent international conference in Abuja, which brought together Christian leaders and Muslim scholars to promote interfaith dialogue, peaceful coexistence and national unity, as evidence of what he described as the organisation’s longstanding commitment to peace.

“An organisation that spends its resources building bridges across religious and ethnic divides cannot be associated with calls for violence against fellow Nigerians,” he said.

He maintained that the message contained in the viral video was inconsistent with the organisation’s activities and values and urged members of the public not to attribute the conduct of an individual wearing its uniform to JIBWIS without establishing whether the person was an authorised member or representative.

JIBWIS, which was founded nearly 48 years ago, said its mission remained centred on Islamic education, humanitarian service and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
