The Chinese Government has awarded a scholarship to a young Nigerian, Ibrahim, popularly known as the “Kano Boy,” after he attracted attention with his impressive command of the Chinese language at China’s National Day reception in Nigeria.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, disclosed the development in a post on X, saying Ibrahim would travel to China under the Chinese Government Scholarship programme to further his education.

“An extraordinary young man, Ibrahim, the ‘Kano Boy’ who captivated us all with his fluent Chinese at our National Day reception last September, is now heading to China on a Chinese Government Scholarship!” Yu said.

The ambassador said he was delighted to host a send-forth for Ibrahim as the young Nigerian prepared to begin what he described as an exciting new chapter in pursuit of his “China Dream.”

Yu said he encouraged Ibrahim to take full advantage of the opportunity, devote himself to his studies and use his experience to strengthen relations between Nigeria and China.

“I encouraged him to make the most of his time, study hard, and serve as a bridge of Nigeria-China friendship.

“We are proud to support bright young minds like Ibrahim in strengthening the bond between our two nations!” the envoy stated.

The scholarship development came as the Chinese ambassador continued a series of diplomatic, cultural and economic engagements in Nigeria aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.

In Lafia, Nasarawa State, Yu met with the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, and expressed appreciation for a mini Durbar organised in honour of the Chinese delegation.

“It was a great honour to meet with His Royal Highness, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, Emir of Lafia,” Yu said.

“My delegation and I are truly grateful for the spectacular mini Durbar. The Durbar festival is the highest and most sacred cultural honour that the Lafia Emirate can bestow.”

The ambassador said China and Nigeria, as ancient civilisations, shared cultural affinities that could provide a foundation for stronger local and people-to-people relations.

“As ancient civilizations, China and Nigeria share deep cultural affinities. China stands ready to strengthen local and people-to-people exchanges, working together for a brighter future of our bilateral ties,” he said.

Beyond cultural diplomacy, Yu also held discussions with the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA, Jani Ibrahim, on expanding economic and commercial cooperation between Nigeria and China.

The ambassador said Beijing looked forward to negotiating and signing an Economic Partnership Agreement for Shared Development with Nigeria, which he said could deliver long-term benefits to citizens of both countries.

“Pleased to meet with Engr. Jani Ibrahim, National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture,” Yu said.

He said trade between Nigeria and China had grown following the implementation of China’s zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries on May 1, 2026.

“Since China’s zero-tariff policy for 53 African nations took effect on May 1, 2026, China-Nigeria trade has grown rapidly, boosting Nigerian exports.

“China looks forward to negotiating and signing the Economic Partnership Agreement for Shared Development with Nigeria to deliver long-term benefits to both our peoples,” the ambassador stated.
