The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations that police officers extorted more than ₦400,000 from a road user during a stop-and-search operation in Abuja, as the Command released a police crime diary extract to support its claim that an identity card displayed in the viral allegation had been reported missing before the alleged incident.

The controversy followed a viral video posted by a social media user identified as VJADEDIM, alleging extortion by officers during a stop-and-search operation in the Federal Capital Territory.

Another post amplifying the allegation claimed that an officer attached to the CP Crack Squad collected more than ₦400,000 from a road user and left his official police identity card inside the person’s vehicle.

Responding on Saturday, the FCT Police Command said the allegation was being investigated but drew attention to what it described as important discrepancies in the circulating narrative.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command said a receipt accompanying the allegation was dated May 19, 2025, indicating that the incident being complained about predated the present leadership of the Command.

“The alleged incident dates back to May 2025 and did not occur under the present administration,” the police said.

“The Command notes with concern the omission of this important timeline in the circulating narrative, which raises questions about the intention behind the publication which seems to be aimed at discrediting the present administration. Nevertheless, the Command remains committed to establishing the facts of the matter.”

The Command also disputed the suggestion that the presence of a police officer’s identity card constituted proof that the officer was involved in the alleged extortion.

Police subsequently released an extract from the Life Camp Police Station Crime Diary concerning the identity card of AP/NO. 275898 Inspector Shadrach Abu, an officer attached to the CP Crack Squad, FCT Command.

The document, dated May 26, 2025, records that Inspector Abu went to Life Camp Police Station on May 20, 2025, to report the loss of his Nigeria Police official identity card.

According to the crime diary entry, the officer stated that the card went missing on May 17 while he was travelling from his residence at Dupe Village, Life Camp, Abuja, to his office around the Life Camp Area Command.

The extract stated that efforts to recover the missing identity card were unsuccessful, prompting him to make the formal report.

This would place the date on which the officer said the card went missing two days before the May 19 date appearing on the receipt connected with the alleged extortion.

The Police Complaint Response Unit, while releasing the document, said the crime diary showed that Inspector Abu had reported his missing identity card before the controversy surrounding the viral video.

“Extract from Police Station Crime Diary as attached shows that AP/NO. 275898 INSPR SHADRACK ABU lost his Identity Card while on transit … and not as explained in the quoted viral video,” the police said, while urging members of the public to “Say No to unverified news.”

The Command, however, said the circumstances surrounding both the alleged extortion and the identity card would still form part of the investigation.

It stressed that the preliminary information concerning the missing card was not being used as a substitute for investigating the substantive allegation.

“The Command distances itself from all acts of unprofessionalism, extortion and misconduct by police personnel,” Adeh said.

“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, has ordered an immediate investigation into the allegation to establish the facts of the incident and ensure that appropriate action is taken based on the findings.”

As part of the investigation, all persons connected with the alleged incident have been invited to appear at the FCT Police Command Headquarters on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 11 a.m.

The Command said their statements and any documents, recordings or other evidence they possess would assist investigators in establishing what transpired.

Police also urged residents alleging misconduct by officers to provide accurate dates, times and locations to facilitate proper investigation and identification of those involved.

Complaints can be submitted through the FCT Police Command Complaint Response Unit on 08107314192.

The Command maintained that it would not shield any officer found to have engaged in extortion or other misconduct, but equally cautioned against presenting unverified allegations as established facts.
