The Federal Government has formally commenced the transfer of the management of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA), marking a major change in the administration of one of Nigeria’s oldest federal secondary schools.

The decision was conveyed in a letter dated September 4, 2026, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary by the Director, Overseeing Office of the Permanent Secretary, Dr Folake Olatunji-David.
According to the ministry, all processes required for the execution of the concession agreement have been concluded, paving the way for the immediate handover of the school’s management to KCOBA.
The ministry directed the Principal of King’s College to begin the necessary arrangements for a smooth transfer of administrative responsibilities to the old boys’ association.
As part of the process, a Transition Committee is to be constituted to supervise the handover and ensure continuity in the administration of the school.
The committee has been given six months to complete the transition.
Significantly, the Federal Government said funding for the college from the Federation Account will cease at the end of the six-month transition period, effectively transferring greater financial and administrative responsibility for the institution to KCOBA.
The ministry also directed the Principal to provide the Transition Committee with a list of members of staff who wish to remain in the employment of the Federal Civil Service Commission.
That directive is expected to help determine the employment status of existing staff as management of the school moves from direct federal administration to the concession arrangement.
The Federal Ministry of Education further instructed that the contents of the letter be brought to the attention of all relevant stakeholders to facilitate an orderly implementation of the agreement.
The concession represents a significant shift in the management structure of King’s College, which has for decades operated as one of the Federal Government Colleges under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.
Under the new arrangement, KCOBA is expected to assume a more direct role in the administration, development and future management of the institution once the transition process is completed.
The Federal Government’s decision also places the Old Boys’ Association at the centre of efforts to manage and sustain the college after direct funding from the Federation Account ends.
While the transition is to begin immediately, the six-month window is expected to allow the school authorities, federal officials, staff and KCOBA to resolve administrative, personnel and financial issues arising from the change in management.
At the conclusion of the transition, KCOBA is expected to take over the management structure contemplated under the concession agreement, bringing to an end the existing model of direct federal administration and funding of the college.
