The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Branch, has commenced an indefinite strike over the failure of the university to pay members their full salary for August 2026.

The industrial action began on Monday, September 7, following a resolution of the branch congress directing members to immediately withdraw all academic and administrative services until the outstanding August salary is fully paid.
The decision was announced in a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-UNIZIK, Innocent Nnubia, and the Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor.
According to the union, the action was taken in compliance with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council, which empowers branches to withdraw their services where salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-UNIZIK Branch, at its Congress held today, Monday, September 7, 2026, resolved to withdraw her services in compliance with the standing Resolution of ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries,” the statement said.
“The ASUU-NEC standing Resolution empowers branches of the Union to withdraw their services when salaries are not paid after the 3rd day of the next month.”
The lecturers said that as of September 7, members had still not received their complete August salaries.
“Today is 7th September 2026 and the University has not paid complete salary for the month of August to our members,” the union said.
ASUU further complained that the latest development was not an isolated incident, alleging that its members had experienced similar salary problems on more than three occasions.
“This makes it more than three times that our members are having this ugly and frustrating experience,” the statement added.
The union stressed that the strike was triggered solely by the non-payment of the complete August salary and urged the university authorities and the institution’s Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to intervene urgently.
“The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026. We therefore implore University Authorities, and Visitor (President Bola Tinubu) to urgently address the situation by ensuring the complete payment of August 2026 salary to our members and ensure that this ugly experience does not repeat itself,” ASUU said.
The Congress consequently directed all members to stop rendering academic and administrative services with immediate effect.
“The Congress resolution directs as follows that all members should immediately withdraw all academic and administrative services. The withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members,” the union stated.
The action is expected to affect lectures and other academic and administrative activities involving ASUU members at the university until the salary dispute is resolved.
When contacted over the development, the Director of Information and Public Relations of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment, saying simply, “No comment.”
