The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into a violent confrontation involving a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies and a female student, following conflicting allegations of sexual misconduct and physical assault.

The incident occurred within the university environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and was captured in videos which subsequently circulated widely on social media.
In one account surrounding the incident, the female student alleged that the lecturer had subjected her to attempted sexual misconduct and had inappropriately touched or grabbed her.
A different account attributed to the lecturer and some members of the university community, however, suggested that the confrontation began after the student was making a social media video in a faculty corridor and allegedly obstructing passage.
According to that version, the lecturer attempted to walk past her and tapped her while saying “excuse me.” It was alleged that an argument subsequently developed after the student responded to him, with the lecturer returning to demand her identity and the deletion of the recording.
The account further alleged that the confrontation turned physical when the lecturer attempted to take possession of the student’s phone.

The precise sequence of events, including what contact occurred before the confrontation escalated, remains disputed and is now the subject of the university’s investigation.
Videos circulating online showed a chaotic confrontation involving the lecturer, the student and other persons at the scene.
During the altercation, the lecturer’s clothes were visibly torn, while reports from within the university community alleged that he sustained injuries, including bite marks on his arm.
The female student and some persons sympathetic to her position, on the other hand, maintained that her actions followed what she described as inappropriate physical contact by the lecturer.
Neither account has been independently established as the definitive version of events.
Reacting to the incident, UNIZIK management condemned the use of violence and warned members of the university community against resorting to self-help or what it described as “jungle justice” in resolving allegations of wrongdoing.
In a statement issued by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, management described the development as unfortunate and stressed that allegations against any member of the university community must be handled through established institutional procedures.
“No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment,” the statement said.
The university said Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie had consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, sexual harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour involving staff or students.
Management, however, stressed that such allegations must still be subjected to investigation and due process before responsibility is determined.
Given the seriousness of both the sexual misconduct allegation and the reported physical assault, the university said it had ordered an “immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation” to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
The institution said the matter was under full review and that the appropriate administrative mechanisms had been activated to ensure that the allegations and counter-allegations were examined fairly and objectively.
UNIZIK reiterated that it would protect the dignity, safety and wellbeing of both students and members of staff.
It also pledged to take decisive action against any person found, after due investigation, to have engaged in conduct that violated the university’s rules or the rights of others.
The controversy has generated considerable debate on social media, with some users condemning the physical attack on the lecturer and arguing that allegations against him should have been reported through the appropriate channels rather than followed by physical retaliation.
Others have argued that allegations of sexual harassment involving lecturers should be treated seriously and investigated without dismissing the concerns of female students.
The university has not publicly identified the lecturer involved in the incident. In its official statement, UNIZIK referred only to a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies while confirming that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation had commenced.
Some social media posts have identified the lecturer as Prof. Sunny Odinye, said to be associated with the Department of Chinese Studies. However, that identification has not been independently verified and was not confirmed in the university’s official statement.
Accordingly, the name should not be treated as established fact unless and until it is formally confirmed by UNIZIK, the police or another competent authority.
Available video clips may form part of the evidence, although the university has not publicly disclosed the materials being examined or whether security camera footage from the building is available.
UNIZIK said further information would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
