Nigeria’s leading privacy and data protection lawyer, Dr. Olumide Babalola, has been called to the Bar of England and Wales at Lincoln’s Inn, London, marking another major international milestone in his legal career.

Babalola was formally admitted on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four Inns of Court through which barristers are called to practise in England and Wales.

The development adds an international dimension to a career that has been closely associated with the growth of privacy, data protection and digital rights law in Nigeria over the past decade.

Dr. Babalola is the Managing Partner of Olumide Babalola LP, a full-service law firm with a strong focus on digital rights, consumer rights litigation, class actions and commercial dispute resolution.

He is also the co-founder of the Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative, a civil society network of lawyers that has litigated more than 50 digital rights cases before Nigerian courts, many of them centred on privacy and data protection.

His litigation record includes some of Nigeria’s most significant data protection cases, including Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative v. National Identity Management Commission (2021) LPELR-55623(CA), regarded as the first Court of Appeal decision to expressly link data protection to the constitutional right to privacy in Nigeria.

The judgment has since become a major reference point in Nigerian legal discourse on privacy and data protection.

Babalola’s work has also taken him to the Supreme Court of Nigeria and the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, where he has continued to contribute to the development of digital rights jurisprudence.

Beyond litigation, he is a prolific legal author and academic. He is the author of Casebook on Data Protection, described as Nigeria’s first law textbook dedicated to data protection, and co-author, with Uchenna Nnawuchi, of Casebook on Privacy and Data Protection in Nigeria.

He has also authored and co-authored several other law books covering employment law, corporate law and legal reference materials, including Babalola’s Law Dictionary.

Dr. Babalola holds a Master’s degree in International Commercial Law with ICT and Commerce from the University of Reading, United Kingdom, and has served as a law lecturer at the University of Portsmouth.

His doctoral research examined the concept of privacy within the jurisprudence of Nigerian courts, reflecting his long-standing academic and professional engagement with privacy law.

He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK, the International Bar Association, and the International Network of Privacy Law Practitioners.

Babalola has spoken at major international fora on privacy and technology policy, including RightsCon, the United Nations Internet Governance Forum, and PrivSec Global.

His firm, Olumide Babalola LP, was also honoured as Data Protection and Privacy Law Firm of the Year at the PICCASO Awards Africa.

The call to the Bar of England and Wales is expected to strengthen Babalola’s engagement with cross-border data protection, technology and digital rights matters involving Nigerian and English law.

The development comes at a time when African data protection regimes, including Nigeria’s Data Protection Act 2023, are evolving alongside global privacy standards.

Colleagues and commentators in Nigeria’s privacy and technology law community are expected to view the milestone as recognition of Babalola’s contribution to the practice, growth and public understanding of data protection law in Nigeria.
