The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef O. Fagbemi, SAN, has intervened in the ongoing disputes within the Nigerian Bar Association over issues relating to the 2026 national officers’ elections.

Fagbemi said his intervention followed the filing of two separate suits by some parties against the NBA and other stakeholders before the High Court of Oyo State, Ibadan Judicial Division, in respect of issues connected with the NBA general elections scheduled for the end of July 2026.

This was contained in a document titled, “Directions and Outcomes of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation Prince Lateef O. Fagbemi, SAN on the Report of the 3-Man Committee Set Up to Look into Causes of the Present Conflicts within the Nigerian Bar Association, Particularly on the Way Forward in Matters Relating to the Upcoming 2026 Elections of National Officers of the Nigerian Bar Association.”

According to the AGF, he invited past Presidents of the NBA to a meeting on June 11, 2026, after taking cognizance of the pending disputes and the need to find a way forward.

He stated that he was informed that ex parte orders of injunction had been granted by the trial court, while appeals against the said orders were already pending before the Court of Appeal.

Fagbemi further noted that the lower courts had stayed proceedings pending the determination of the appeals against the ex parte orders.

He said that when the matter came up before the Court of Appeal on June 1, 2026, he instructed counsel representing the office of the AGF to seek a short adjournment to enable him, in his capacity as the Chief Law Officer of the Federation and Official Leader of the Nigerian Bar, to broker an amicable settlement among the parties.

The Court of Appeal subsequently adjourned the matter to June 15, 2026.

A separate invitation letter sighted showed that parties were invited to a meeting towards the amicable resolution of issues arising from the suits, including CA/IB/110/2026 — Aham Ejelam, SAN & 4 Ors v. Ibrahim, Esq & 7 Ors and I/221/2026 — Ibrahim Lawal, Esq. & Ors v. Incorporated Trustees of the Nigerian Bar Association & Ors.

The meeting was scheduled for June 11, 2026.

The development indicates an attempt by the AGF to resolve the leadership and election-related disputes within the NBA ahead of the association’s 2026 national elections.
