A 2026 graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Miss Farida Bungudu, has turned years of scepticism about her home state into a record-breaking academic run, emerging the Overall Best Graduating Student of the Faculty of Law and becoming the first student from Zamfara State to finish top of the faculty with First Class Honours.

Results released on Wednesday confirmed a performance that places her among the faculty’s all-time best, including the third highest cumulative grade point average ever recorded in its history.
Bungudu said the journey began as a dream few people believed in, with critics arguing that she was reaching too far, too fast.
“What they didn’t know was that this dream was never about me alone,” she said. “It was about proving that Zamfara State, too, belongs in every room, every conversation, every arena where excellence is measured.”
Record Breaking Run At ABU
Her list of achievements includes the following:
- Overall Best Graduating Student, LL.B Class of 2026, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
- First Class Honours, LL.B (Civil Law)
- Third highest CGPA ever recorded in the faculty’s history
- Fifth female Best Graduating Student in the faculty’s history
- First female from the Northwest to graduate with a First Class and as Best Graduating Student in the faculty
- First Zamfara State student from the faculty to graduate with a First Class and as Best Graduating Student
- First Chief Judge in the faculty’s history to graduate as Best Graduating Student with First Class Honours
“After All, What Do Zamfara People Know?”
Speaking to TheNigeriaLawyer, Bungudu identified the stereotype attached to her state of origin as the single biggest obstacle she had to overcome.
“The biggest obstacle I faced was the stereotype. The moment you say you’re from Zamfara State, people look down on you. There’s this instant assumption of, ‘After all, what do Zamfara people know?'” she said.
She said her motivation came from an observation she described as a painful truth.
“What kept me going was a painful truth I had observed: many of us from Zamfara in Nigeria don’t always put in the required effort to pursue excellence. And because of that, we’ve opened the door to mockery. So I became determined to prove a point, that we, too, like anyone else, can achieve great things.”
“These Heights Were Not Achieved By Chance”
On how the result was built, the graduate was emphatic that nothing about it was accidental.
“I must emphasise that these heights were not achieved by chance. They are the result of consistency, discipline, and dedication sustained over the years.”
She acknowledged what it cost her: “The journey demanded sacrifices. I consciously prioritised academics over social engagements, media, and at times, personal relationships.”
Describing her method, she said: “My approach to academics went beyond studying. I committed to every aspect of the process. For the past seven years in the Faculty of Law, I have consistently read ahead of lectures, I have never missed a class, I have never resumed late after any break, and I have not watched a single movie.”
“It is the accumulation of these small but consistent habits that has brought me to where I am today.”
Balancing Academics And Leadership
Bungudu said she had originally intended to keep clear of student leadership altogether.
“Initially, my focus was solely on academics. I had no intention of getting involved in extracurricular or leadership activities. But as opportunities for leadership presented themselves, I discovered that I could excel in both spheres.”
She said the balance was a matter of deliberate method rather than instinct: “To strike that balance, I cultivated discipline in organisation, time management, and prioritisation. This became critical whenever my academic duties and leadership responsibilities conflicted. It was these competencies that allowed me to manage so much, while still maintaining and protecting my academic excellence.”
“Your Faith And Your Excellence Can Co-Exist”
Asked whether her faith as a Muslim woman had presented any obstacle in her academic or leadership journey, she said it had not, and grounded her answer in constitutional law.
“Alhamdulillah, I have not faced any obstacles in my academic and leadership journey because of my faith as a Muslim woman. We live in a time where the right to freedom of religion is widely recognised. It is enshrined as a fundamental right under Section 38 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and further protected by several international human rights instruments.”
She addressed a direct message to other young Muslim women: “To my fellow Muslimahs, I say: do not compromise your faith for any opportunity. And do not allow anyone to make you feel that your faith is a barrier. Your faith and your excellence can, and should, co-exist.”
“My Goal Is To Reach The Pinnacle Of Legal Practice”
On what comes next, Bungudu set out both a professional ambition and an obligation she considers attached to it.
“My ambition extends beyond personal achievement. I seek to build a career defined by excellence, integrity, and outstanding client representation. My goal is to reach the pinnacle of legal practice.”
She named her areas of professional interest as Environmental Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property Law and Human Rights.
“Furthermore, I am deeply committed to the next generation. For young girls in Zamfara and the entire Northwest, I will create pathways through mentorship and scholarships. My mission is to raise a generation of women that our society will be proud of.”
“The legal profession needs more of us, and I am determined to widen the door so that many more can enter.”
A Record In Student Leadership
Beyond academics, Bungudu also broke ground in student leadership and advocacy. She served as the second female Chief Judge of the ABU Students’ Representative Council Court and as Chief Justice of the Law Students’ Society.
She also served as Chairman of the LSS Privileges Committee, Chairman of the Council of Benchers, and Chairman of the LSS Judicial Council.
Her profile further lists her as a Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) Scholar, an award-winning national and international moot court champion, Best Advocate and Best Oralist. She also served as Assistant Chief of the Ahmadu Bello University Students Support Associates.
“We Now Have A Seat At The Table”
Speaking after the announcement, Bungudu framed the achievement as bigger than personal success.
“Today, I stand as a voice for every Zamfara State student who has ever felt limited, overlooked, or underestimated,” she said. “We can walk into any room now, and know we belong in the conversation. We have broken through the glass ceiling, and we now hold an undeniable seat at tables once thought unreachable.”
She described the milestone as merely a blueprint for younger students from Zamfara and the wider Northwest.
“I have walked the path; now it is your turn to run,” she said, adding that she will later share details of the sacrifices that happened behind the scenes to make the result possible.
For a state whose students have long battled stereotypes about academic capacity, Wednesday’s announcement marks a new reference point, one that, for Farida Bungudu, was answered not with words, but with results.
