The Council of Legal Education, Nigerian Law School, has warned candidates awaiting Call to the Bar against the unauthorised use of barristers’ regalia, including wig and gown, before their official Call ceremony.

In a notice addressed to all candidates for Call to the Bar, the Council said it had observed with concern what it described as a rising and unacceptable trend among some candidates.

According to the notice, some candidates have been circulating invitations, photographs and videos of themselves dressed in full legal regalia and portraying themselves as qualified legal practitioners before being formally called to the Nigerian Bar.

The Council said some of the affected candidates had also been disseminating such content on social media platforms.

It specifically condemned the conduct of candidates posing as lawyers, addressing themselves as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court and appending the title “Esquire” to their names before their official Call to Bar.

The Council said such conduct amounts to misrepresentation and contravenes Section 22 of the Legal Practitioners Act.

The notice also faulted candidates who wear the wig and gown with unauthorised, casual or non-prescribed apparel, saying such conduct is inconsistent with the dignity, decorum and standards governing the use of legal regalia.

It stated that such conduct violates Rule 45 of the Rules of Professional Conduct.

The Council directed all candidates who had breached the rules to immediately take down all offending posts, photographs, videos and related content from social media and other online platforms.

It warned that failure to comply with the directive may attract disciplinary consequences and could adversely affect the candidate’s eligibility and fitness for Call to the Bar.

The notice was signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration.
