The Ghana government has summoned Thando Dalamba, South Africa’s acting high commissioner, over rising xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner protests targeting migrants, including Ghanaian nationals.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the summons was to formally communicate Accra’s “strong concern” over reports of intimidation, harassment, and threats against foreign residents in parts of South Africa.

The development follows a surge in anti-foreigner demonstrations, with viral videos showing protesters calling for the removal of migrants from local communities. In several instances, demonstrators accused foreigners of taking jobs and placing pressure on public services, chanting slogans rejecting the presence of other Africans.

Ablakwa warned that such actions undermine the dignity, safety, and rights of law-abiding residents. He expressed particular concern over reports advising foreign nationals to remain indoors for their safety amid the growing tension.

He cited a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian national was allegedly confronted and asked to prove his immigration status, with some individuals reportedly ordering him to leave the country.

The minister noted that similar incidents in the past have escalated into violence, injuries, and fatalities, stressing the urgent need to prevent a recurrence.

Ghana has therefore called on South African authorities to take immediate and decisive steps to protect foreign nationals and guarantee their safety.

“The unprovoked harassment of law-abiding individuals is unacceptable,” the statement said, adding that Ghana has lodged a formal protest and is seeking firm assurances that such incidents will not happen again.

The situation has heightened diplomatic concern, as regional leaders continue to emphasise the importance of protecting the rights of all Africans and maintaining peaceful coexistence across the continent.
