Security chiefs on Thursday briefed President Bola Tinubu on the current security situation and ongoing military operations against terrorists and bandits across the country, amid a renewed wave of deadly attacks by insurgents in northern Nigeria.

The closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa came against the backdrop of what has been one of the most intense periods of terrorist activity in recent months, with at least three senior military officers and several soldiers killed in the last week by terrorists believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province. The insurgents have attacked more than five military formations in Borno and Yobe states, inflicting casualties and heavy damage, although the military maintains that most of the attacks were repelled.

Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, a retired general, addressed State House correspondents after the meeting, explaining that the session enabled the armed forces to provide the president with an updated assessment of conditions on the ground.

Musa said the briefing was also intended to correct what he described as inaccurate public interpretations of recent security developments, noting that media reporting had not always accurately reflected the full picture.

While acknowledging the loss of military personnel, Musa insisted that security forces have inflicted far heavier losses on the terrorists and bandits, with several insurgent commanders killed in recent operations.

He urged Nigerians not to be discouraged by reports of attacks, saying such news does not capture the full extent of ongoing military successes.

Musa disclosed that President Tinubu had approved additional equipment to strengthen ongoing military operations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to prosecuting the war against insurgency effectively.

The minister also revealed that security forces have adjusted their strategies to counter emerging threats, noting that terrorists historically escalate attacks during the Ramadan period in the belief that such actions carry spiritual rewards. He said the revised approach had already yielded results, with the military recapturing several locations and neutralizing insurgent commanders in recent days.

The meeting brought together Nigeria’s entire security apparatus. Those present included Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff Waidi Shaibu, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu, Chief of Air Staff Sunday Aneke, Chief of Naval Staff Idi Abbas, and Chief of Defence Intelligence Emmanuel Undiandeye.

Also in attendance were the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed, and the Director-General of the State Security Service, Oluwatosin Ajayi.

Musa concluded by assuring Nigerians that all security agencies are working together as a unified team and expressed confidence that lasting peace and security would be achieved.
