The Federal Government on Monday highlighted the strategic significance of the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery, urging that it be fully supported to ensure its success.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Godwin Obaseki Bagudu, made the call at the opening of the Nigerian Economic Summit 2025 in Abuja, describing the refinery as a national asset critical to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Addressing the recent industrial action by oil workers under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), VP Shettima stressed that national interest must prevail over labour disputes.

“Aliko Dangote, he’s not an individual, he’s an institution, and a leading light in Nigeria’s economic landscape. How we treat this gentleman will shape how outsiders judge us,” Shettima said.

He noted that if Dangote had invested his resources abroad, he might be worth between $70 and $80 billion today, but he chose to invest in Nigeria. “We owe it to future generations to protect, promote, and preserve the interests of this great nation,” Shettima added.

He urged both labour and the organised private sector to exercise caution, patriotism, and mutual respect in defining their relationship, emphasising, “It’s not about holding the whole nation to ransom because of a minor labour dispute. Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN. Nigeria is greater than each and every one of us. I’m not coming to you as a partisan.”
