Tyler Robinson, 22, the suspect in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, appeared in a Utah court on Tuesday, charged with the activist’s killing. Prosecutors confirmed they are seeking the death penalty in a case that has rocked the United States.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot in the neck last week during an event on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, Utah. The attack, witnessed by thousands, sparked national mourning among conservatives and heightened political tensions across the country.
Robinson was captured 33 hours later after his parents persuaded him to surrender. He appeared in court wearing a suicide prevention smock and spoke only to confirm his identity as District Judge Tony Graf read out seven charges against him, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced at a press briefing that he intends to pursue the death penalty, citing the nature of the crime and evidence gathered. Gray also revealed a possible motive, citing text message exchanges between Robinson and his roommate, who is a transgender male transitioning to female and with whom Robinson was in a romantic relationship.
Court documents showed Robinson left a note under his keyboard for his roommate, admitting, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” In subsequent messages, Robinson expressed frustration at Kirk’s “hatred” and stated, “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” He instructed his roommate to delete the exchanges and warned against speaking to the media.
The messages detailed Robinson’s planning, including concerns over the retrieval of his rifle, potential evidence, and his father’s involvement. Prosecutors described the exchanges as providing insight into Robinson’s intent and premeditation.
A makeshift memorial has been set up outside the Turning Point USA headquarters in Phoenix, as the investigation continues. The suspect now faces seven criminal charges and the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.
