The Federal Government has denied claims that it signed agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that the documents being referenced were merely proposals.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, clarified this on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja, noting that the 2009 and 2011 documents often cited by ASUU as binding agreements were never signed but were proposals presented during negotiations.
He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to resolving all outstanding issues with the university lecturers’ union in a sustainable and permanent manner.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa stated.
The minister also dismissed reports suggesting that he scheduled a meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment on Thursday, clarifying that the government has maintained consistent engagements with the union, the most recent of which took place last week.
Alausa explained that while ASUU submitted proposals through the Yayale Ahmed-led committee, the Federal Government convened a high-level meeting to deliberate on the proposals line by line. Present at the meeting were key officials from the Ministries of Education, Labour, and Justice, as well as representatives from NUC, TETFund, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, and the Budget Office.
A seven-member technical team, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, has been set up to harmonize the government’s counter-proposal. The team includes representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Labour, Education, NUC, TETFund, Salaries and Wages Commission, and the Budget Office, with the Director of University Education serving as secretary.
Alausa emphasized the administration’s commitment to constitutional, truthful, and sustainable solutions, assuring that any agreement reached will be implementable and financially realistic.
“Previous agreements with ASUU were never signed by the government, including the 2021 draft agreement. This time, the President has directed that whatever agreement we reach must be implementable and financially realistic,” he said.
He reiterated that the Tinubu administration would not sign any “bogus” or unsustainable agreements and stressed that ASUU and other academic unions are partners in progress.
“Nigerians can rest assured that this administration is fully committed to keeping our children in school and ensuring uninterrupted academic activities in our institutions,” Alausa concluded.
