Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, OFR, SAN, Life Bencher and Chancellor of Newgate University, Minna, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mentor and elder cousin, Asarya Ismail Gadzama, describing him as “an architect of destiny” whose impact transcended the legal profession.

In an emotional statement issued on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Chief Gadzama chose to celebrate rather than mourn the passing of a man he credits with shaping his personal and professional journey.

“Asarya Ismail Gadzama was more than a legal luminary; he was destiny’s instrument — a man whose gravitational pull altered orbits and shaped futures,” Chief Gadzama declared.

He recounted the extraordinary story of how their paths crossed in 1986, not by coincidence but by what he called “the mathematics of fate.” Though initially posted to Ilorin for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Chief Gadzama revealed that Asarya had heard of his promise as an undergraduate and went to great lengths to locate him at 1B Polo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos — then the address of the Nigerian Law School.

Through the intervention of Mr. Hamidu Wathanafa, then Principal Private Secretary to Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida, and through Asarya’s insistence, Gadzama was redeployed to Kano State. There, at 9A Post Office Road, his legal career was born under the mentorship of Asarya Gadzama.

“He didn’t just accept my redeployment request — he had been expecting me. Teacher and student, mentor and protégé, brought together by divine purpose,” he recalled.

Chief Gadzama described his mentor as a man who embodied justice with a human face — a legal practitioner who fought not for titles but for the vulnerable, and whose leadership was defined by lifting others as he climbed.

“When the time came to plant this flag of justice in Maiduguri, it was Asarya who entrusted me with opening his office there — a vote of confidence that shaped my career and my character,” he added.

He fondly remembered Asarya’s presence at his wedding in 2024, highlighting the continued mentorship and encouragement that defined their relationship over the decades.

To the Gadzama family and wider legal community, Chief Gadzama offered words of consolation and inspiration:
“Your father built cathedrals of opportunity where others saw only walls. The young lawyers he trained, the justice he delivered — these are his living monuments.”

In a stirring conclusion, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged all who were touched by Asarya’s life to honor his memory not just with words, but by living out his values — of courage, humility, justice, and the belief that “every giant once stood where we stand today.”

“Asarya Ismail Gadzama’s legacy is not confined to courtrooms or law books. It lives in the chain reaction of goodwill he set in motion — a force that will keep advancing long after we are gone.”

Chief Gadzama closed with a personal note of pride:
“I am most proud to share that I indeed cut my legal teeth under your tutelage. Your story is not over — it is simply passed to us to tell.”
