At the recently concluded NBA Aba Branch Law Week 2025, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, FCIArb (UK), delivered a thought-provoking paper titled, “The Strength of the Judiciary: People’s Confidence—Glory Foretold or Disaster Waiting to Happen?”

In his presentation, Akangbe critically examined the current state of the Nigerian judiciary, questioning whether it remains a steadfast guardian of justice or teeters on the brink of systemic collapse. While underscoring the judiciary’s constitutional role as the ultimate refuge for citizens and a vital check on executive and legislative powers, he raised concerns about growing challenges such as corruption, politicized judicial appointments, contradictory legal precedents, and protracted delays in dispensing justice.

Despite these challenges, Akangbe highlighted notable judicial triumphs, including landmark rulings affirming financial autonomy, advancing gender equality, and upholding constitutional rights, which demonstrate the judiciary’s capacity to shape national progress.

He emphasized that the judiciary’s destiny—whether heralding glory or inviting disaster—rests significantly on the combined resolve of judges, legal professionals, and the Nigerian populace to safeguard justice and uphold integrity.

Expressing gratitude to the NBA Aba Branch for the invitation and warm reception, Akangbe described the event as an intellectually stimulating forum marked by robust discussions and active participation. He praised the branch for creating a vital platform to reflect on and engage with critical issues affecting the judiciary’s future.

Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe SAN is a former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch and a respected authority on legal and arbitration matters.
