It was a day of grief and heartbreak in Anambra State as the remains of 39-year-old Associate Professor of Building, Dr. Okechukwu Ezeokoli, were laid to rest in his hometown of Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.

His untimely death in a ghastly motor accident along the Ore-Lagos Expressway has sent shockwaves through the academic community, particularly at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where he served as a respected staff member.

Dr. Ezeokoli, described by colleagues and students as a brilliant mind and rising star in the field of Building, had been married for only five years and leaves behind a young family.

In a show of honour, the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), in collaboration with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, announced plans to immortalize the late scholar.

Speaking at the funeral, the 3rd National Vice President of NIOB, Builder Dr. Mrs. Eucaria Enebe, who represented the Institute’s National President, described Ezeokoli as “a rare gem.”

“Dr. Ezeokoli was a catalyst for growth in our organization, a role model to younger members, and a true team player. We have lost one of our finest,” she said.

Also paying tribute was Builder Nwekete Chinasa Jonathan, South East Coordinator of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, who described the late professor as pragmatic, focused, and unfailingly respectful.

“Though he was a year my junior, he excelled with such passion and dedication that he later became my PhD supervisor and even lectured me. His humility and brilliance stood out,” he recalled.

On efforts to immortalize him, Jonathan said the Council would deliberate and determine an appropriate tribute to his legacy.

Dr. Builder Peter Uchenna Okoye, Head of the Department of Building at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, delivered an emotional tribute.

“He was once my student, later my colleague, and even served as my best man at my wedding. He handed over to me as Head of Department and was also my confidant. His death is devastating. I wonder if we’ll recover in the next ten years,” Okoye said.

Builder Nweke Kingsley Obiora, Chairman of the NIOB Anambra State Chapter, described Ezeokoli as “an exceptional young man who had already reached the pinnacle of his career.”

“At 39, he was an Associate Professor, a first-class graduate, and a retained academic. He was always eager to learn, open-minded, and accommodating. We will deliberate on the best way to immortalize him,” Obiora added.

The tragic loss of Dr. Okechukwu Ezeokoli has left a deep void in academia and beyond, with many struggling to come to terms with the death of a man whose brilliance, humility, and commitment to excellence set him apart.
