Odunayo Alade, father of 14-year-old Kehinde Paul Alade, who was tragically killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer in Ibadan, has revealed that the late secondary school student had dreams of becoming a lawyer.

In an emotional interview with News Central TV, Alade recounted how Kehinde, a Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) student, recently switched from Science to Arts because of his passion for law.
“Just last week, he told me he wanted to become a lawyer,” Alade said. “Before resuming first term in SS1, I had already bought him science textbooks, but when they resumed second term, he said, ‘Daddy, I’m no longer interested in science. I want to become a lawyer.’ So, he moved to the Art class.”
The young boy’s dreams were cut short on Tuesday morning along Gbagi Market Road in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State. Kehinde was in his father’s car, en route to school, when he was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by a police officer accompanying operatives of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
Alade said he was taking Kehinde and his twin brother to school and was in a hurry because the older brother was sitting for an important WASSCE paper at 8:30 a.m. Trying to avoid delay from OYRTMA officials who attempted to stop him, he maneuvered through a commonly used shortcut.
Moments later, he heard a gunshot.
“Kehinde started shouting, ‘Daddy, Daddy!’ I thought he was just scared, but then his twin said, ‘Daddy, Paul has been shot!’ I pulled over, brought him out, and saw blood everywhere,” Alade recalled.
Kehinde was rushed to Welfare Hospital, where he was placed on oxygen and later transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. Tragically, he died before reaching the facility.
Beyond grieving the loss of his son, Alade also described the personal sacrifices he had made as a single father since his wife abandoned the family seven years ago.
“I promised myself I would raise my children well. I’ve worked tirelessly to provide for them and refused to remarry to focus solely on their well-being,” he said.
Alade is now demanding justice, calling for accountability from the police and OYRTMA.
“This cannot go unpunished. No parent should go through this. I want justice. The way they use power against citizens is uncalled for. Once they are given a little power, they misuse it. I need to understand why this happened,” he said.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with eyewitnesses confirming that OYRTMA officials were aware there were children in the vehicle before the gunshot was fired.
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that the officer responsible for the shooting is in custody, and a full investigation has been ordered by Commissioner Johnson Adenola, to be led by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Kehinde’s body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary, pending an autopsy.
