The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected a new set of national officers, with Dr. Christopher Piuwna emerging as the new national president.

The election, which drew 419 delegates from various chapters across the country, was conducted during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin, Edo State. The five-day congress concluded earlier today, Sunday, May 12.

Dr. Piuwna, who previously served as Vice President of the union, secured a total of 219 votes to defeat his closest rival, Dr. Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, who garnered 118 votes.

In the vice-presidential contest, Dr. A.A. Sado was elected, polling 232 votes to defeat Professor O.S. Sowande, the outgoing national treasurer, who polled 174 votes.

An insider who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity confirmed that outgoing president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has officially handed over leadership to Piuwna, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the union.
