Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), joined a distinguished assembly of legal luminaries at the 24th Commonwealth Law Conference in Malta. Participating in Session C1, titled “Balancing Scales: Fair and Expeditious Regulation of the Legal Profession,” Osigwe contributed to a critical dialogue on maintaining integrity and efficiency in legal oversight, alongside top legal minds from across the globe.

The conference, hosted by the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA), is a flagship event in the international legal community, running from April 6 to 10, 2025, at The Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre. It attracts lawyers, senior justice leaders, and academics to exchange insights on contemporary legal challenges and innovative solutions. This year’s gathering has spotlighted topics ranging from professional regulation to access to justice, with Osigwe’s session drawing particular attention for its relevance to legal governance worldwide.

Representing Nigeria, the NBA President shared perspectives on the country’s framework for regulating the legal profession, spotlighting the collaborative roles of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Body of Benchers in upholding professional standards and disciplining errant practitioners. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the independence of legal regulation from external pressures, advocating for a system rooted in transparency and accountability.

“The integrity of the legal profession is non-negotiable,” Osigwe stated during the session. “In Nigeria, we are committed to reforms that ensure discipline is both fair and swift, aligning with global benchmarks while addressing our unique challenges.”

Joining Osigwe on the panel were other prominent figures, including Lynette Seebaran Suite, SC, President of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago; Jennifer Ball, President of the Law Society of New South Wales; and Roddy Dunlop, KC, Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, Scotland. Together, they explored strategies to balance regulatory efficiency with fairness, offering a rich exchange of ideas drawn from diverse jurisdictions.
