The police in Enugu State have refuted reports that their operatives arrested a legal practitioner, Frank Agbowo, over his allegations of extortion against police personnel in Nsukka Local Government Area.

Mr. Agbowo, on Thursday, posted a video on Facebook claiming that some police officers deployed to the Nsukka Area were extorting residents and motorists.

Giving an example, he mentioned a man identified as Ikechukwu, who was allegedly extorted of N1 million by police operatives at night. Mr. Agbowo further alleged that the officers tortured and threatened to kill Ikechukwu if he failed to hand over the money.

The lawyer called on police authorities to identify and punish the officers involved.

On Sunday, some residents of Nsukka claimed that operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit arrested Mr. Agbowo over his comments.

Clinton Ogbonna, National President of the Nsukka Youths General Assembly, said the police arrested Mr. Agbowo on Sunday morning.

Ogbonna stated that the youth group demanded the “immediate and unconditional release” of the lawyer. He added that police extortion of residents has become increasingly common in Nsukka, revealing that he himself had been a victim of such extortion in March.

He said Mr. Agbowo’s detention was “a direct result of his courageous efforts to expose the unethical conduct of some rogue police officers” in the area.

“His arrest is a blatant attempt to silence him and stifle his advocacy for accountability and justice. We urge the authorities to ensure that his rights are protected and safeguarded throughout this process,” he said.

However, when contacted on Sunday afternoon, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, denied that Mr. Agbowo had been arrested.

Ndukwe, a superintendent of police, said the lawyer was only invited to provide evidence regarding his allegations against police officers.

“We didn’t arrest him. We only want him to come and explain certain things to us. He made a video, so we need to understand what the allegations are about,” he said.

“We just want to get clarification so that it will help us manage the allegations he has raised and determine who should be held accountable.”
