*Says Wike-loyal Lawmakers Setting Traps For Governor

Former appointee of President Bola Tinubu and political analyst Mahmud Jega has stated that Rivers State Chief Judge, Simeon Amadi, is the main obstacle in the state House of Assembly’s efforts to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Jega made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television, where he analyzed the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and the role of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He claimed that the lawmakers loyal to Wike were actively looking for ways to trigger the impeachment process against the governor.

“Rivers State assembly members are loyal to Wike and bent on impeaching Fubara,” Jega explained. “They are setting traps for the governor, trying to get him to commit an impeachable offense. Their main obstacle now is the state Chief Judge, who they are going after.”

He further noted that the lawmakers, who are majority members of the assembly, are plotting to force an impeachment by accusing the governor of financial mismanagement, particularly through the refusal to allow him to present the 2025 budget, which led to him being locked out of the assembly last Thursday.

Jega highlighted the ongoing tension between the state assembly and Governor Fubara, noting that the legislators, numbering around 27, had recently obtained a Supreme Court ruling that reinstated them and ordered the governor to re-present the 2025 budget to the full House and reconduct the local council elections. However, Fubara’s attempts to fulfill this mandate were blocked by the assembly, which claimed they were not properly informed of his visit.

The political analyst also pointed out that the assembly’s next step is to initiate an investigation into Chief Judge Amadi, accusing him of age falsification. This, Jega suggested, was part of a broader strategy to weaken the Chief Judge’s influence and ensure that he does not constitute an impeachment panel favorable to the governor.

Earlier, on Saturday, Wike had publicly stated that he had no intention of interfering with the duties of the Rivers State House of Assembly. However, the political maneuvering by the assembly members aligned with Wike is seen as part of a broader effort to remove Fubara from office.

Jega concluded by emphasizing that the impeachment plot is a high-stakes political game in Rivers, with the potential to destabilize the state if the crisis continues. He suggested that only the intervention of President Tinubu could prevent further escalation, as he has the authority to influence Wike’s actions and calm tensions within the state.
