A graduate of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Adamu Sunday, has raised the alarm over an alleged case of identity theft and administrative negligence after discovering that another individual was mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) using his Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration number.

The incident has left Sunday frustrated and depressed, as he is unable to participate in the mandatory one-year national service despite graduating with a Second Class Upper degree in Economics.

Adamu Sunday, who registered for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2018 and gained admission to Nasarawa State University the same year, graduated in 2024. However, his attempts to enrol for the NYSC programme were repeatedly rejected. Upon investigation, he was informed that his JAMB registration number had already been used to mobilise another person for the NYSC scheme in 2019.

Sunday expressed his disbelief, stating, “How could I have written UTME in 2018, gained admission the same year, and then gone for NYSC in 2019? It doesn’t make sense. I was shocked when I found out.”

Sunday reported the issue to the JAMB Zonal Office in Abuja, where a thumbprint verification confirmed that he was the legitimate owner of the registration number. He was directed back to his university to resolve the matter. However, the university’s Student Affairs Division allegedly failed to take decisive action, instead advising him to undergo JAMB regularisation—a process he fears could invalidate his admission and render his degree useless.

“I was told that even if the Vice Chancellor got involved, the Student Affairs Division would still advise him on the matter. They insisted I either do regularisation or forget about serving,” Sunday lamented.

Sunday suspects foul play, questioning why the university has been unable to locate the individual who used his registration number. “If the person is truly a graduate of the school, why can’t they find him? It’s a criminal act to use someone else’s JAMB number, but the school is treating it lightly,” he said.

He also revealed that other students may have been affected by similar issues, with some opting for regularisation to resolve the problem. However, Sunday remains adamant that he should not suffer for an error he did not commit.

In a response to the allegations, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Jafaru Abdullahi, stated that the institution is investigating the matter. He explained that the individual who used Sunday’s registration number shares the same name, leading to the mix-up. Abdullahi assured that disciplinary action would be taken against the culprit once the investigation is concluded.

Abdullahi also defended the regularisation process, describing it as a routine procedure for students who switch courses or face admission discrepancies. He assured that regularisation would not negatively impact Sunday’s academic records or future prospects. “Regularisation does not have any repercussions whatsoever. It’s just a process to align his records,” Abdullahi said.

Despite the university’s assurances, Sunday remains unconvinced. He has written to both JAMB and the NYSC headquarters, seeking their intervention. He insists that the university should take responsibility for the error and ensure that he is mobilised for the NYSC programme without compromising his academic records.

“I wrote to JAMB, got admitted, and graduated with a good grade. I shouldn’t have to suffer for someone else’s mistake. All I want is to serve my country and move on with my life,” Sunday said.
