A legal practitioner and Convener of the Security Situation Room, Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., has lauded activist Omoyele Sowore for his courage in rejecting the stringent bail conditions imposed by the Police High Command in Abuja. Sowore was reportedly asked to provide a high-ranking civil servant as surety, a condition Ogbankwa described as “obnoxious.”

“It takes incredible resolve to challenge established authorities in Nigeria, and Sowore’s stance is commendable,” Ogbankwa stated.

In solidarity with Sowore and his legal team, led by Chief Femi Falana, SAN, and Deji Adeyanju, Ogbankwa announced plans to include a new book, Articles for Justice, in his upcoming book launch on February 11, 2025—coinciding with his birthday. This addition is intended to honor their unwavering fight for justice.

Citing the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, Ogbankwa emphasized that the legal profession must remain a “bastion of hope, help, and succor for the repressed, the oppressed, and the suppressed.” He added that true freedom is achievable when society collectively pushes for it.

Criticizing the police’s role as both complainant and investigator in Sowore’s case, Ogbankwa called it a violation of the principle of natural justice, referencing the legal maxim Nemo Judex In Causa Sua (“No one can be a judge in their own cause”). He argued that the police’s involvement in investigating a matter stemming from their roadblock activity creates an inherent bias.
