Frontline international law expert and global vice chair of the International Law Association, Prof Damilola Olawuyi, (SAN), has advocated for increased financial and technical support for youth-driven initiatives to accelerate the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals across the continent.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who is also UNESCO Chair on Enivronmental Law and Sustainable Development at HBKU made these remarks at the Second Edition of the Professor Damilola Olawuyi SAN Inter-School Debate Competition held at the Students’ Eco-Friendly Center, University of Ibadan. Organised by the Green Institute Fellows under the leadership of Latona Adedeji, the event provided a dynamic platform for secondary school students and university undergraduates to engage in critical discussions about sustainable energy.
This year’s topic, “Exploring Renewable Energy in Nigeria: An Opportunity to Transition from Fossil Fuel or a Waste of Time?”, sparked lively debates and drew significant attention from sustainable energy enthusiasts across the University of Ibadan campus and beyond. The event was attended by leading sustainability experts, including the Chief Host, Dr. Adenike Akinsemolu, who is the Founder of the Green Institute, Mr. Sope Afolayan, Founder of the Climate Emerge Innovation Development (CEID) Hub, Mr. Keji Kolawole, Program Manager at the Institute for Oil, Gas, Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (OGEES Institute), Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, (ABUAD), as well as representatives of green and environment clubs and societies from secondary schools across Ibadan, Oyo State.
While delivering his keynote speech, Prof. Olawuyi congratulated the young debaters and students for immersing themselves very early in sustainability initiatives, noting that our future societies and world depends on their green innovation. Professor Olawuyi, SAN stated that: “Youth driven initiatives in areas of technology, renewable energy, accountability and sustainability entrepreneurship amongst others can unlock homegrown solutions to some of the complex challenges facing our world. Young innovators across the continent, in Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda have already made progress in promoting the use of ‘soft’ climate technologies, such as locally made solar panels, fuel-efficient cooking stoves, and decentralised micro and mini grids to enhance energy access in remote areas. We cannot afford to be left behind. I look forward to working with you and supporting you to fully maximize your youthful innovation and technological know-how to accelerate homegrown solutions to the energy challenges facing our country and continent.”
Dr. Akinsemolu followed with a goodwill message, motivating the participants and emphasising the transformative role of education in sustainable development. While commending Mr. Latona and the entire organizing team for leading this innovative agenda, she noted that the 2nd Prof. Damilola Olawuyi SAN Inter-School Debate Competition stands as a testament to the Green Institute’s commitment to nurture and build the next generation of sustainability leaders through education, advocacy and innovation.
The ensuing debate competition unfolded in two engaging rounds, with three schools vying for top honours before a panel of esteemed judges. The audience was treated to thought-provoking arguments, as participants showcased exceptional research, oratory skills, and passion for the topic. Between rounds, Mr. Sope Afolayan delivered an inspiring lecture, highlighting the role of young minds in shaping a greener Nigeria. As results were collated, the Green Fellows Team Lead shared a message of encouragement, urging students to pursue their dreams with determination and resilience. The event concluded with the announcement of results, with certificates and awards presented by Mr. Keji Kolawole. The competition recognised the participants’ dedication and excellence, leaving everyone inspired and eager to continue the conversation on renewable energy and sustainability.
The debate not only celebrated academic excellence but also fostered a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s energy challenges and opportunities. By empowering young voices to discuss critical issues, the event highlighted the power of education and collaboration in building a sustainable future.
