The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced the appointment of Professor Edoba Omoregie SAN as the institution’s new Vice-Chancellor.

The announcement was made by Prof. Shaibu Umaru, Chairman of the Governing Council, on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the university’s main campus in Benin City.

Professor Omoregie, a renowned professor of constitutional law and governance, will succeed the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lillian Salami, whose tenure is set to conclude on December 1, 2024. Omoregie emerged as the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the university after a rigorous selection process that involved 27 candidates vying for the prestigious position.

Born on April 5, 1969, in Benin City, Professor Omoregie is an alumnus of the University of Benin, where he obtained his first, second, and third degrees. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992 and was conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2021, a testament to his exceptional contributions to the legal profession.

During the announcement, Prof. Shaibu Umaru expressed confidence in Professor Omoregie’s ability to lead the university to greater heights, citing his extensive experience in academia and his proven track record in leadership and management.
