The process of selecting a new substantive Vice Chancellor for the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) is facing potential setbacks due to allegations of underground moves to manipulate the process in favor of a particular candidate.

According to sources, the situation nearly derailed last Friday’s meeting of the university’s Governing Council members when heated arguments erupted over accusations that some council members were working to favor a specific candidate. The council is now divided into two factions: those who want the standards set by the supervising Federal Ministry of Education to be adhered to and those who want the process to be altered.

The controversy revolves around the 10-year post-professorial experience requirement for candidates aspiring to become the Vice Chancellor of a federal university, as stipulated by the Federal Ministry of Education. However, in the August advertisement placed by the new Governing Council, this requirement was omitted.

The local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had previously condemned the advertisement placed by the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, accusing him and the Minister of Education of breaching certain rules.

When contacted, ASUU National President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the union is closely monitoring the situation but has not officially been informed of any attempts to manipulate the process.

The university’s Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Mallam Yahya Mohammed, acknowledged the complaints received regarding the advertisement but assured that the Council would be sensitive to stakeholders’ concerns and maintain the institution’s integrity. He denied allegations of the process being skewed to favor any particular candidate.

Efforts to reach the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, and the Chairman of the Governing Council, AVM Ismaila Kaita, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

As the selection process continues, the university community and stakeholders await further developments, hoping for a transparent and unbiased appointment of the new Vice Chancellor.
