In a recent interview with Sahara Reporters, prominent Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana SAN, alleged that he and his daughter have been threatened following claims made by popular Nigerian activist, VeryDarkMan.

According to Falana, some individuals, whom he believes to be “mentally deranged,” have threatened to burn down his office if he pursues legal action against VeryDarkMan. Additionally, these individuals have allegedly sent messages to one of Falana’s daughters, threatening to kill her if her father proceeds with the case.

“The only disturbing area in this scenario is a threat to me and one of my two daughters,” Falana stated in the interview. “Some of these guys who I believe are mentally deranged have dared me, saying, ‘If you like, if you go to court, we shall burn your office.'”

Falana further revealed that his daughter had received messages stating, “If your father goes to court, we shall kill you and beg your part in this country.”

In response to these threats, Falana stated, “I just laughed and I asked my girl, ‘Don’t worry, I will take it off.’ I’ve already taken that up.” He also emphasized the need to make these individuals aware of his stance on the matter.

The alleged threats come in the wake of audio recordings shared by VeryDarkMan, in which Nigerian cross-dresser Bobrisky purportedly claimed that both Femi Falana and his son, Falz, had reached out to him prior to his release from prison. The recordings also implied that Femi Falana had negotiated a settlement of 10 million naira to settle the case.

In light of these claims, Falz issued a 24-hour ultimatum to VeryDarkMan, demanding the immediate retraction of all defamatory remarks.

Falana, known for his decades-long fight for justice and human rights, responded firmly to the threats, stating that such intimidation would not deter him from pursuing justice. He emphasized that he has endured far more serious threats during his activism under various military regimes in Nigeria and remains undaunted by these recent developments. “Even if I wasn’t planning to go to court before, I’m going to call off their bluff and let them know that we now operate in a country where the rights of everybody must be respected,” Falana said.

Falana also categorically denied the allegations that he had collected ₦10 million to secure a pardon for a convict, describing the claim as “totally uncalled for” and part of a smear campaign. He asserted that his legal practice does not charge for pardon-related cases and recounted numerous examples where his chambers had offered pro bono services for human rights and pardon cases, both in Nigeria and abroad.

Regarding allegations that his son, Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, was acting as a front for him in securing deals, Falana laughed off the claims, stating that his son had built his career in entertainment independently and had never used his family name to gain advantage.

Falana concluded by emphasizing that he would pursue civil proceedings rather than criminal charges against VeryDarkMan, as the amended Cyber Crimes Act no longer covers libel or defamation. Instead, Falana intends to follow up with a lawsuit, signaling that the allegations will be dealt with in a civil court.
