The dispute over the recently concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national elections took a new turn today as presidential candidate Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN reiterated his demand for an independent audit of the electoral process.

In a strongly-worded letter to the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), Ikwuazom rejected the reasons given by the committee for not granting his initial request made on July 21, 2024.

In his latest letter, the senior advocate faulted the reasons given by the ECNBA for denying his request. He argued that the NBA constitution mandates the ECNBA to grant access to the requested information to interested parties under conditions that address any legitimate data privacy concerns.

Mr. Ikwuazom also critiqued the NBA 2024 Elections (Post-Audit) Report released by the ECNBA, describing it as falling “far short of what is required to inspire confidence in the electoral process of the NBA.” He pointed out several shortcomings of the report including the absence of a post-election Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT).

“Our observations on the Report coupled with the failure of the ECNBA/ElectionBuddy to release the logs for the election period, especially the initial hours which could reveal server errors or attempted breaches make our call for an audit by a neutral third-party even more imperative,” Mr. Ikwuazom stated.

The senior advocate urged the ECNBA to expedite the release of the requested documents “in the interest of transparency, systemic integrity, and fidelity to the oath sworn by its members to uphold the Constitution of our dear Association.”

In a related development, sources confirmed that Ikwuazom chose to spend time with his family in the UK rather than attend the NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) amid the ongoing election dispute. His absence at the conference was seen by some as a protest against the handling of his audit request.
