Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has been selected as the 14th Asagba designate of Asaba Kingdom in Delta State. The announcement was made yesterday by the Ochendu Asagba, Prof. Anthony Edozien, at a meeting of the Asagba-in-Council and members of the kingdom held at the palace of the Asagba of Asaba.

Azinge, a distinguished Professor of Law, was chosen from among nine other candidates presented for selection by the Okpala-Ukwu Uggbomata. The selection process, which involved the five quarters of the kingdom, was conducted in a transparent manner, according to the Ochendu Asagba.

Speaking through Louis Edozien, the Ochendu Asagba emphasized the unity of the kingdom in the decision, stating, “There is no rancour, and we have all agreed in one voice for him to lead us.” He further clarified that while Asaba has democratic characteristics, it is not a democracy, and the power of the Asagba is sacred.

“Therefore, with that guidance vested in me as Ochendu Asagba and the authority vested in me under the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, I pronounce the person, Epiphany Azinge, as the 14th Asagba of Asaba designate,” declared the Ochendu Asagba.

The installation of the new Asagba will involve various rites and traditions, conducted under the guidance of the Oni-Ahaba, traditional chiefs, and Okpala-Ukwus. Until the installation is completed, the authority of the Asagba remains with the Ochendu Asagba.

Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He served as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies from 2009 to 2014 and is currently a Judge of the Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal, London, United Kingdom, representing Nigeria and Africa. Azinge is also the founder and senior partner at Azinge & Azinge, a law firm in Abuja, where his wife, Valerie Azinge, SAN, is also a partner. He holds the distinction of being the first Okilolo (Philosopher) of Asaba.
