Tobenna Chigbo Erojikwe, the first runner-up in the recently concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, has called for an official audit of the election results.

In a statement released today, Erojikwe expressed his inability to accept the results announced by the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), citing several irregularities and breaches in the electoral process.

The ECNBA declared Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, as the winner of the election with 20,435 votes, while Erojikwe secured 10,998 votes to emerge as the first runner-up. Chukwuka Nwabueze Ikwuazom, SAN, polled 9,018 votes to become the second runner-up.

In his statement, Erojikwe highlighted several concerns, including the opaqueness of the selection process for election service providers, the ECNBA’s failure to provide voting guidelines and a voters’ list within the timeframe stipulated by the NBA Constitution, and the curious steady increase in votes for the winning candidate at the top of each hour during the election.

Erojikwe also pointed out discrepancies in the vote tallies, with the sum of votes cast for candidates being either in excess of or less than the total votes at various points. He also questioned the integrity of the live election results, as they were displayed on a different platform (go.ecnba.org) than the actual voting platform (electionbuddy.com).

Furthermore, Erojikwe reported instances of supporters receiving emails acknowledging their votes before they had cast them, suggesting possible double-voting or data manipulation. He also noted that the voting continued beyond the advertised end time of 11:59 pm on July 20, 2024.

Tobenna Erojikwe’s Statement on NBA Elections 2024

In light of these irregularities, Erojikwe has called for an official audit of the election results in accordance with the NBA Constitution. He emphasizes the importance of ensuring faith and confidence in the NBA’s electoral process and his commitment to upholding the rule of law and fair practices.

Erojikwe expressed his gratitude to the members of the NBA who supported his vision of building a courageous and resilient Bar where no lawyer is left behind. He stated that he would reserve his rights pending the outcome of the election audit.
