In an address at the opening of the 64th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef O. Fagbemi outlined the government’s progress on justice sector reforms and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Justice, Judiciary, and NBA.

Fagbemi reported that for the first time, the Ministry, National Judicial Council, and NBA convened a National Justice Summit and signed a joint communique establishing a framework for cooperation on justice sector reforms going forward. He praised the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to improving conditions of service for judicial officers.

The Attorney General affirmed the Ministry’s support for public interest litigation and citizens’ push for local government autonomy, lauding a recent Supreme Court decision as a step forward. He announced plans to inaugurate a Working Group to undertake a holistic review of the Laws of the Federation.

Fagbemi thanked outgoing NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau for his service and initiatives to protect the integrity of the Bar, while congratulating incoming President Mazi Afam Osigwe. He called on the NBA to support President Tinubu’s investments in the justice sector to ensure proper resourcing, efficiency and respect for the rule of law.

The Conference, themed “Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria,” continues through the week with legal professionals, scholars and leaders discussing issues facing the Bar and the nation. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu to officially open the proceedings.
