NATIONAL [ONLINE] JUDGMENT WRITING COMPETITION 2020
Commencement Date: 17th Day of July, 2020.

1. THE INSTITUTION
The Judicial Council, Student Union, University of Ilorin is the arm charged with the administration of justice among over 45,000 undergraduate students of the University. With an enviable record of encouraging advocacy and investing in human capital, we also boast of nurturing most First-Class graduates of the faculty of Law of the above University. We are totally committed to harnessing the potentials of the human mind and identifying possibilities. We lead other Councils in having a Law Report, Standard court system and now a University of Ilorin Law Review, a journal of socio-legal studies that will rival any Law Review in the world, with time. Through our innovative ideas, we have been able to secure a platform for student judges to interrelate and share valuable information for their collective progress.

2. COMPETITION BACKGROUND
As a very sensitive institution, our constant digest of the judicial decisions show that these judgements are still rooted in legalese and archaic legal language, distant completely from laymen language. Our inquisition into this problem produced one amazing result—this same concern was resolved in the 1970s by the PLAIN ENGLISH MOVEMENT [PEM] but only prominent in the United States.

We therefore found ways to make this movement relatable to student judges and general members of the public and the NATIONAL [ONLINE] JUDGEMENT WRITING COMPETITION is one of the mechanism we have drawn up to promote plain language in judgement writing and encourage research among universities. It is and will be the first of its kind.
