The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Kebbi State Branch, Aminu Hassan, has dismissed allegations of widespread corruption in Nigeria’s judiciary, insisting that the justice system continues to uphold integrity, ethical standards and the rule of law.

Hassan spoke on the sidelines of the flag-off of the Equity Bar Law Week in Birnin Kebbi, where he addressed public concerns over the administration of justice and the conduct of judicial officers.

He acknowledged that some litigants who are dissatisfied with court decisions may attempt to influence proceedings, but maintained that judges and other judicial officers are bound by strict ethical and legal obligations.

“Some people, because they are not satisfied with the evidence against them, may try to influence outcomes. However, judicial officers are expected to uphold the law and maintain ethical standards,” he said.

The NBA chairman stressed that both offering and accepting bribes are criminal offences, urging members of the public to report any suspected case of judicial misconduct to the appropriate authorities.

“We have always discouraged the giving and taking of bribes. The courts play a critical role in maintaining order and resolving disputes in society. We believe the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man,” he added.

On delays in the justice system, Hassan said ongoing judicial reforms in Kebbi State had helped to improve case management and speed up adjudication.

He commended the Kebbi State Government for its efforts to digitise the judiciary, describing the initiative as a positive step towards improving efficiency and bringing the justice system in line with global technological standards.

Hassan also urged legal practitioners to use the Law Week as an opportunity to update their professional knowledge and embrace new developments in legal practice.

According to him, technological advancement offers new opportunities for faster, more efficient and more effective justice delivery.

The Equity Bar Law Week was attended by Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, as well as members of the legal community.
