The National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Archdiocese of Lagos, has said that between 2023 and 2026 it supported the release of about 300 inmates, while contributing to their reintegration and to efforts aimed at reducing reoffending.

The figure was disclosed at a gathering held to review the impact of the chapter’s outgoing executives over the past three years.
The association said its drive to provide free legal services to indigent persons, and to decongest the correctional centres within its jurisdiction, formed a major part of that period, reflecting its mandate to promote the rule of law and to ensure access to justice for those who most need it.
Speaking at the event, a speaker said the country’s difficulties with leadership are not confined to the political class, and called on members to examine their own conduct in whatever position they occupy.
“We always complain about leadership issues. It’s not just for politicians. Wherever we find ourselves, whatever space we find ourselves, we should try to be good leaders, lead well and pursue the common good, pursue the common interest and not be selfish,” the speaker said.
“Don’t do things because you want to be seen, for visibility, for the purpose of people clapping for you.”
The speaker said lawyers, and Catholic lawyers in particular, ought to be at the forefront of ensuring that the country has what is required for ethical leadership and for a government driven by justice.
With the country preparing for the 2027 general election, the gathering also served as an occasion for reflection on ethical leadership and democratic nation building.
“We lawyers should show example in our various leadership positions, whether as legislators, whether as a minister, whether as a governor. Once you are a lawyer, you are supposed to make a difference,” a speaker said.
“We must show that law should be used as an instrument to promote good governance, promote happiness, promote justice for all.”
Turning to the mood of the country ahead of the polls, a speaker acknowledged the anxiety among citizens while insisting that responsibility for the outcome rests with the electorate.
“Naturally, citizens are anxious. Everyone is wondering what’s going to happen and how is it going to be. Is it going to be fair, or is it not going to be fair? And the sad thing is that the outcome of any and everything depends on us.”
The association said it would be urging Nigerians to turn out at the polls.
“We will be asking Nigerians to go and vote during the next election, because it’s only when you vote that you can help to change the system. Do not say my vote will not count.”
Although the event carried a celebratory atmosphere, the association said it remains committed to intensifying its service to God while upholding justice and touching lives.
