A United States military KC-135 refueling plane crashed in western Iraq on Thursday during ongoing US-Israel operations against Iran. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that at least five crew members were aboard the aircraft.

US Central Command said two aircraft were involved, describing one as “a loss” and confirming that the crash was not caused by hostile or friendly fire. Rescue operations are ongoing, though casualties have not yet been confirmed. The KC-135 typically carries three crew members, with up to five aboard for aeromedical evacuation missions.

This marks the fourth US aircraft lost in the conflict. Last week, three US fighter jets were mistakenly downed by friendly fire in Kuwait, though all six crew members survived. Seven American troops have been killed in the conflict so far, including six killed by an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait and one wounded in an attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. About 140 US service members have been wounded, including eight severely.

Iran has denied laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz despite concerns over unmanned naval attack drones. Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi warned nations participating in “aggression” against Iran not to expect safe passage, while experts warned that Iran’s drone arsenal could “create havoc” along the critical waterway.

US President Donald Trump claimed the US is “totally destroying the terrorist regime of Iran” militarily, economically, and otherwise. He issued a warning of imminent escalation, writing on Truth Social: “Watch what happens to these deranged scumbags today.” Trump said Iranian military capabilities—including their navy, air force, missiles, and drones—were being decimated and framed the strikes as retaliation for decades of attacks on innocent people worldwide. He vowed to “finish the job” against Iran.

The new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the recently killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not been seen in public since assuming office. A speech attributed to him aired on state television on Thursday, warning that Iran would avenge the blood of its martyrs.

Reports indicate that Mojtaba may be in intensive care at Sina University Hospital in Tehran, potentially injured in the US-Israeli strikes that killed his father. Security has been tightened around the hospital, and the Iranian government has deployed senior medical personnel to attend to him.

Regional tensions escalated further as Iran-backed Hezbollah militants launched approximately 200 rockets into northern Israel. Israel responded with airstrikes on Tehran and Lebanon, killing at least 11 people. The UN reports that up to 3.2 million people have been displaced in Iran due to the conflict, with more than 759,000 internally displaced in Lebanon.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that resolution of the conflict would require recognition of Iran’s “legitimate rights,” payment of reparations, and security guarantees against future attacks.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Mojtaba Khamenei “can’t show his face in public,” labeling him a “puppet of the Revolutionary Guards” following his father’s death.

As the US-Israel-Iran conflict enters its third week, military engagements, civilian displacements, leadership uncertainties, and escalating regional hostilities continue to heighten international concern over the humanitarian, strategic, and economic consequences of the war.
