South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for tolerance, unity and cooperation following renewed xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa.

The attacks have reportedly led to the death of at least two Nigerians since tensions flared last month, with reports of looted shops and growing fear among Nigerian communities.

Some pupils of Nigerian descent are also said to be afraid to attend school amid the rising hostility.

African nationals from Ghana and Zimbabwe have also reportedly been targeted in the latest wave of attacks.

Speaking on Tuesday after a meeting with Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, Ramaphosa urged South Africans to remember the support other African countries gave the country during the struggle against apartheid.

He said South Africans are not inherently hostile to people from other countries, stressing that African nations must work together to address the crisis.

“South Africans inherently are not against people from other nations. We are one people, we have always been one people, and of course, we’ve got to also pay heed to the security of those from other countries who are in South Africa, but also pay heed to the concerns that are being raised by South Africans,” Ramaphosa said.

According to him, his discussion with President Chapo focused on the need for affected countries to work jointly to find solutions.

“President Chapo and myself discussed this matter, and we agreed that we should work together. It’s not only one country that is affected.

“All countries that have foreign nationals in South Africa are also affected as South Africa is affected, so we must all work together, join hands, to find solutions to this problem. In the past, we have found solutions,” he said.

Ramaphosa rejected the suggestion that South Africans hate other Africans, insisting that many African countries stood with South Africa during its liberation struggle.

“And we say, South Africans do not have a hatred to other people from other countries on our continent. They supported us during our struggle,” he added.

The South African President acknowledged that many citizens are facing difficult economic conditions, but said hardship should not lead to hostility against migrants.

“As much as South Africans are going through tough economic challenges right now, we also need to be acting as people who are kind and welcoming to other people from other nations,” he said.

He, however, urged employers in South Africa to comply with immigration and labour laws, warning against hiring foreigners without the required work permits.

“But we also say to employers in South Africa that we’ve passed a law that people who do not have the necessary work permits in South Africa should not be employed; we should give way to South Africans,” Ramaphosa said.

He also called on foreign nationals to ensure they have proper documentation to live and work in South Africa, just as South Africans are expected to do when living in other countries.

The appeal comes amid growing diplomatic concern over the safety of Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa, following repeated incidents of violence, looting and intimidation.
