*Apologises To Students And Parents

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay in the conduct of the 2025 English Language examination to intensified efforts aimed at preventing examination malpractice, particularly the leakage of question papers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, WAEC acknowledged the disruptions experienced by candidates during the English Language Paper 2, originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 28. In many centres nationwide, the exam was conducted several hours behind schedule.

Footage and images widely circulated on social media showed students sitting for the examination as late as 10 p.m., some relying on torchlights and kerosene lanterns due to power outages—an occurrence that drew sharp criticism and raised concerns about the welfare of candidates.

WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, explained that the delay stemmed largely from the council’s determination to uphold the integrity of the examination process.

“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper. While we successfully achieved our objective, it inadvertently impacted the timeliness and seamless conduct of the examination,” Adesina stated.

The examination body also cited additional challenges such as logistics, security issues, and sociocultural factors that affected operations in certain areas.

“In order to forestall future occurrences of this nature, the council is currently collaborating with security agencies to streamline processes and enhance operational efficiency,” the statement added.

WAEC expressed regret over the disruptions and extended an apology to candidates, schools, and parents for the inconvenience caused. The council also expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their patience during what it described as a challenging period.

“We recognise the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this delay on the candidates, their schools, and parents. We sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused,” Adesina said.

One incident was reported in Delta State, where candidates reportedly began their English examination late in the evening due to delays in the arrival of question papers.

The 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates commenced on April 24 and is scheduled to end on June 20.
