The Senate of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State, has approved the expulsion of six students after an investigation found that they rewrote an examination at the private residence of a lecturer days after the original examination had been conducted.

The university also approved the withdrawal of nine other students over poor academic performance and failure to register for two consecutive semesters.
The decisions were among resolutions reached at the university Senate’s 167th Regular Meeting held on August 26, 2026, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Uredo Omale.
The university said the case began on July 1, 2026, after management received what it described as credible information that a lecturer was coordinating some students to rewrite an examination at his private residence.
Security operatives of the university subsequently moved to the residence, located behind the Police Area Command Office along Idah Road, Anyigba, where Dr Maji Okpanachi of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology and some students were arrested alongside exhibits.
Following the incident, the security report was referred to the university’s Examination Misconduct Committee for investigation.
The committee’s findings were later presented to the Senate, which considered the report at its August 26 meeting.
According to the university, the committee confirmed the security report and also relied on what it described as confessional statements by the lecturer and the students involved, as well as other available records.
The investigation found that the affected students had rewritten BOT102 — Introduction to Plant Science at the lecturer’s residence several days after the official examination had taken place.
The university further said the committee established that the students paid ₦10,000 each to the lecturer in order to rewrite the course examination at his residence.
Following consideration of the findings, the Senate approved the expulsion of the six students for what the university described as gross examination misconduct.
Okpanachi was not, however, summarily dismissed by the Senate. Instead, the university approved his referral to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate disciplinary proceedings in accordance with its established rules and regulations.
In a separate decision, the Senate approved the withdrawal of nine students on grounds of poor academic performance and failure to comply with the university’s registration requirements.
Reacting to the decisions, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman, said the university remained committed to maintaining high standards of academic excellence, discipline, integrity, patriotism and quality assurance.
He warned that the institution would not tolerate conduct capable of undermining the credibility and integrity of its academic and examination processes.
Usman commended the committees that investigated the matter, describing their work as thorough and painstaking and saying the outcome demonstrated management’s resolve to strengthen accountability within the university.
He urged both staff and students to respect the rules governing examinations and other academic activities, while advising students to remain focused on their studies and uphold high standards of character and learning.
The university has directed the expelled students to surrender all property belonging to the institution in their possession, including their identity cards and other official items, before leaving the university.
