The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, has criticised the recent US travel restrictions on Nigeria, describing them as unfair, particularly for law-abiding Nigerians seeking to conduct legitimate business in the United States.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Osigwe said the restrictions unfairly target “innocent people” while addressing only a small percentage of visa overstays.

“While I understand America’s position on preventing illegal immigration and visa overstays, punishing those who simply want to travel is unfair. The US should find a balance,” Osigwe said.

He noted that the reported 7.5% of Nigerians who overstay their visas represents a negligible number and argued that the blanket restriction appears to justify a predetermined position rather than addressing the real issue.

“There are persons who come in lawfully, do not overstay, and do not abuse their visas. Punishing them by restricting access to the US is unfair. The best approach is to identify those who overstay and ensure they return to their home countries,” he added.

The comments come after US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation expanding travel restrictions to include 15 additional countries, affecting the entry of foreign nationals.
