The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally barred individuals from publicly using honorary doctorate degrees and professorship titles, declaring the practice unethical and misleading.

In a statement signed by Professor Augustine Ocloo, Acting Deputy Director General of GTEC, the commission warned that it would begin naming, shaming, and initiating legal action against individuals who continue to use such titles in official or public settings.

GTEC’s directive is aimed particularly at politicians, businesspeople, religious leaders, and other public figures who adopt honorary academic titles without undergoing the rigorous processes associated with earning them through accredited academic institutions.

“This notice goes especially to politicians, businessmen and businesswomen, men and women of God, and any other category of persons to desist from officially using the honorary doctorate and professorship titles in their everyday life,” the commission stated.

GTEC emphasized that the widespread and often fraudulent use of honorary titles undermines the integrity of Ghana’s higher education system and devalues genuine academic achievements, such as the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and professorial ranks, which are earned through substantial research, academic contributions, and peer recognition.

Honorary degrees are typically symbolic recognitions conferred by universities on individuals who have made notable contributions to society or specific fields. However, GTEC noted that degree mills have been exploiting this by awarding honorary titles for a fee, leading to a surge in unearned academic titles in public use.

“The practice dilutes the integrity of the higher education system and the value of true doctoral education and promotion of the professorial system in universities,” GTEC said, describing the act as both deceitful and unethical.

The commission’s warning signals a push to restore credibility and professionalism in Ghana’s academic space. It has urged the public to respect the sanctity of academic titles and to verify credentials where necessary.
