Fresh violence on Wednesday disrupted the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Idanre, leaving two persons dead and five others injured in what authorities described as a politically charged clash.

The incident occurred at Odode-Idanre, headquarters of Idanre Local Government Area in Ondo State, as the ruling party conducted congresses across its 203 wards. The violence is believed to be a spillover from Tuesday’s disruption at the party’s secretariat in Akure, where suspected hoodlums invaded a stakeholders’ meeting and assaulted party leaders.

Among those reportedly targeted was Raphael Adetimehin, younger brother of the APC state caretaker chairman. He sustained machete wounds after assailants allegedly mistook him for his brother due to their resemblance. Eyewitnesses said his vehicle was set ablaze during the attack, and he was rushed to the General Hospital in Idanre, where he was said to be in critical condition.

Ade Adetimehin, the caretaker chairman, alleged that the assault was politically motivated and carried out by hoodlums linked to political actors in the state. He claimed his brother was attacked after being mistaken for him and that gunshots were fired before the assailants resorted to machetes.

A family source later indicated that Raphael may not have survived the attack, adding that two other men, including one said to be driving a Toyota Venza, were fatally shot during the chaos. Identities of the additional victims were still being confirmed at the time of filing this report.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that two persons were confirmed dead while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment. The police also confirmed that a vehicle was set on fire during the unrest.

Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, alongside the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) commandant in the state, led a joint security team to the scene and restored order. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the violence.

The latest clash follows Tuesday’s attack at the APC secretariat in Akure, where suspected hoodlums armed with sticks and machetes disrupted a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the ward congresses. The meeting was thrown into chaos as party members fled for safety.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s incident, Ade Adetimehin accused members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) of carrying out the attack on the orders of the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The governor has since denied any involvement.

Speaking on the allegations, Aiyedatiwa said he was attending a birthday ceremony at the time of the secretariat attack and had asked that the stakeholders’ meeting be rescheduled to enable his attendance. He maintained that the disturbance was caused by rival groups loyal to different aspirants and not sponsored by him.

Security agencies have pledged to intensify surveillance across the state to prevent further breakdown of law and order as the APC’s congress process continues.
