United States President Donald Trump will not attend the wedding celebration of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson, as he remains in Washington amid pressing government matters, even as his administration faces another major development with the resignation of Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.

Donald Trump Jr., 48, and Bettina Anderson, 39, were legally married in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, May 21, according to Palm Beach County marriage records. The couple is expected to hold a private wedding celebration during the Memorial Day weekend, reportedly on a private island in the Bahamas, with only family and close friends in attendance.

President Trump, who had earlier said he would try to attend the wedding, later announced that he would remain at the White House because of ongoing national and international developments.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said although he wanted to be with his son and Anderson, “circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America,” would not allow him to attend.

“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” the president said.

He added that it was important for him to remain in Washington, D.C., during what he described as “this important period of time.”

Trump nevertheless congratulated the couple and wished them a happy marriage.

The wedding comes months after Trump Jr. and Anderson confirmed their engagement in December 2025. Trump Jr. was previously married to Vanessa Trump, with whom he shares five children, and was also formerly engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Anderson, a Palm Beach socialite and environmental conservation advocate, is the daughter of the late businessman and philanthropist Harry Loy Anderson Jr. She is involved in philanthropic work and serves as executive director of Paradise.ngo, an environmental conservation organisation.

Meanwhile, Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, has submitted her resignation to President Trump, citing her husband’s recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard, 45, said she would step away from public service to support her husband, Abraham Williams, through the difficult period.

“My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer,” she said in her resignation letter. “He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.”

She is expected to remain in office until June 30, while her deputy, Aaron Lukas, will serve as acting Director of National Intelligence.

Trump thanked Gabbard for her service, saying she had done “an incredible job” and would be missed.

Gabbard’s resignation brings an end to a turbulent tenure as head of America’s 18 intelligence agencies. Her time in office was marked by strained relations within the intelligence community, policy disagreements, and reports that she had become increasingly sidelined on major national security matters, including military operations involving Iran and Venezuela.

Her exit makes her one of several senior officials to leave Trump’s second-term cabinet.
