A Federal High Court sitting in Calabar has remanded six persons over the alleged kidnapping and killing of Prof Ekanem Phillip Ephraim, a Professor of Neurology at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

The suspects are Patrick Essien Etim, also known as Pato; Etim Effiong Eyo, alias It Can Happen; Anthony Essien Etim, known as Humble; Bassey Anthigha Asuquo; Isaac Uwem Ekpeyong, also called Kemzy Stunt; Ekpeyong Effiok Eyo, alias Yobo; and Imoh John Udofa, known as Imopart.

They were remanded on Wednesday by Justice Rosemary Dugbo Oghoghorie of Court Two of the Federal High Court, Calabar, and ordered to be held at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Afokang.

In suit number FHC CA M10 26, the Department of State Services filed an ex parte motion seeking an order to detain the suspects pending further investigation and legal advice.

The court granted the application and ordered that the defendants remain in correctional custody pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The matter was adjourned to April 21, 2026.

The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services between December 2025 and January 2026 following investigations into alleged kidnapping and other criminal activities in Calabar and surrounding areas.

Security sources linked the defendants to the abduction and death of the late professor, as well as the alleged kidnappings of Mrs Eme Udeme Daniel, Dr Roland Ipuole, Francis Kibe and James Osim.

They are also facing allegations of vandalising public electrical infrastructure in parts of Calabar.

The case is expected to resume after the issuance of legal advice by the prosecuting authorities.
